Avoid Telecom and Data Service Scams!
Small business owners beware! There are a variety of telecommunication resellers like granitenet.com or Granite Telecommunications who are using unethical practices in their contracts to take advantage of business owners.
Their approach goes like this:
- First they collaborate with property developers to establish “preferred” telecommunication provider for a mall or retail outlet.
- They present business owners with a “Letter of Agreement” that only lists pricing and then notes that the service may be subject to an early termination fee that is outlined in their terms and conditions. They will then reference a webpage. ex. http://granitenet.com/legal
- The actual language for the early termination fee is hidden in one of 40 different legal documents posted on the page.
- The termination fee isn’t actually a fee. Instead, it’s an obligation to pay out the contract in it’s entirety, thus, permanently locking the business owner into the service agreement.
While technically this business practice is legal, it is also highly unethical.
Granite deliberately separates the termination fee language from the actual signature page in the hopes that they can “trap” business owners who do not take the time to search through 40+ different documents. If they actually included this information on the letter of agreement it’s likely that business owners would not agree to their contracts.
In short. Avoid doing business with Granitenet, Granite Telecommunications, or any company that attempts to deceive their customers!
